When thetime for writing is missing, it’s a good sign. I’m in Belgrade since eighteen days, and now it’s crazy hot. It’s a kind of heat that I’ve never experienced before. It seems to have a hot air constantly pointed in your face. Before I bought pears at the market and when I got home to eat them, they were warm as freshly baked cookies.
My album on Facebook is called “Lost in Cyrillic” but it’s a lie. I wanted to feel lost, but I actually feel quite confortable. I had problems on the first day, reading the transport map that was only in Cyrillic but that’s it. The first few days I wrote a few notes about differences in my notebook, but then I stopped. The final note is particularly stupid it says “Water drips from the balconies.” It’s been a long time since I saw water dripping from the balconies.
I thought that serbian would have sounded to my ears like a meaningless lullaby, however I can clearly recognize all those four words I know. Today I realized that the radio was talking about a concert I want to go see Friday.
After a quiet first week, it came one of those super full weeks that I love. I spent most of my evenings at BIGZ, a huge building, once home to a major publishing house and now open for rehearsal rooms and many other things. There is a jazz café on the roof, from where you can see the whole Belgrade and where the gin and tonic cost little more than a beer. There were people passing here. Simona, that I’ve been reading for such a long time and that I finally met. And then came also Jenn, on tour here form Berlin. We ate a lot of hummus and talked for a long time.
Jenn was here months ago to look for contacts for a concert, just talking to people she met. She had rehersal for two nights in a row with these serbian guys, who were completely different from her and from me, for a lot of reasons. And at the end the concert was beautiful and special. I can’t wait to return to Berlin to tell the tale.
One evening we were at BIGZ, I went out looking for water and found the one, that so far is my favorite serbian band, the Kriške. They sounded like the Black Angels and a lot of other beautiful things (anche se sembrano più i Foals in questo video).
Hers last night, after the concert, we walked to the hostel and to my house, talking about Belgrade and Berlin and the various differences. I said that I like Belgrade because it’s very natural and there aren’t certain stupid social labels that there are elsewhere. That the people here seem much more relaxed. That there are no cool cafes and lame cafes. There are only cafe different from each other. It’s hard to explain, but I felt the same thing the first time I came here. As we were talking about this, we saw a pack of stray dogs tearing a cat and that was the most absurd and frightening scene I’ve seen since I came here.

Last Sunday I went in the only bar I know, to read my book “Step by Step into Serbian”, and I found myself in a sort of mini open air, like the ones in Berlin. I really miss Berlin and it ‘s strange because there is no place I had missed so much, so soon after I left it and despite the fact that the place where I am now is nice and I really enjoy it.

While I’m here the Casetta Lou Fai is going on and has grown, maybe even too much. I feel like I have some sort of child who has grown up and is independent and I am particularly proud of. My contribution now is minimal, but that thing we are doing in that place is my creature and this makes me happy. So I feel ready for a kind of second maternity.

I decided to resign from the Erasmus in Poland for several reasons. Since usually one takes on experiences abroad such as thesewhen you are trying to figure yourself out, and I think I almost did. SinceI know I’m not giving up for fear of taking a leap into the unknown, because I did it in the past and also coming to Belgrade was somehow the same. Since I want to go back to my new home in Berlin, on the balcony on the Urbanstrasse, where me and Bongio are used to listen to Acid Pauli and console ourselves when we are a bit sad (Bongi, I miss you so much!). Since I like the University , but I don’t love it, and I decided to use it as a benefit and not as an obligation. And since I have this big new project, that now occupies just some bytes on my computer, and if it’s turn out to be impossible, I want to be devote myself to something similiar which most likely will not be “the exportability of governance in countries with limited statehood”.
